Updated: Oct 25

In part 3 of the this guide, looking at how much an extension costs, we are talking about the fees for structural engineers.

You may need a structural engineer when carrying out a renovation, extension or making changes to your home that could affect the stability of your property.

A structural engineer will work with your architect and builder by offering essential information that is required for the build process, including structural drawings and load calculations.

This information may also be necessary when gaining planning permission and complying with building control regulations.

Whether you will need a structural engineer for your next renovation project will depend on the project in hand, the following is a rough guide price for a single storey extension on the rear of the property that also requires changes to the roof.

For budgeting purposes you should allow a fee in the region of £650 plus VAT.

Keep an eye on the VAT some of the services include the figure in their quotes others do not. Generally people working in the trades quote a figure without VAT.
